Apple’s iPad mini A20 Pro overhauls the compact tablet but comes with a steep price

Apple has refreshed its smallest tablet with a larger OLED screen, speaker technology built into the display, improved performance and water resistance for the first time, but the A20 Pro launches at a notably higher starting price.

Apple’s latest iPad mini, the A20 Pro, brings a broad set of upgrades to the company’s compact tablet line, packing a larger OLED display and improved internal hardware into a body that is both smaller and lighter than before. The company has also added water resistance and reworked the audio design, with speakers integrated into the display itself.

Design and display

The new mini swaps in a bigger OLED panel while reducing overall size and weight, a combination that aims to deliver a more immersive screen experience without sacrificing portability. For the first time in the mini line, Apple has introduced official water resistance, expanding the device’s suitability for use outside strictly protected environments.

Performance and features

Apple has also pushed the internal performance, describing the device as delivering ‘‘serious performance’’. Audio has been rethought as well, with speakers embedded into the display area rather than traditional bezels or chassis-mounted drivers. These changes are positioned to bring the mini closer in capability to larger iPads while keeping its small-footprint appeal.

Price and positioning

The A20 Pro starts at £699 (€749/$699/A$1,099), about £200 higher than the launch price of the previous iPad mini model. That starting price sits roughly £270 above the base-model iPad (A16) and is only about £50 below the 11-inch iPad Air M4, narrowing the price gap between the mini and Apple’s larger tablets.

Outlook

Reviewers have praised the mini’s compact form and upgraded screen and audio, but the higher price point may prompt potential buyers to weigh the advantages of the smaller size against the value of larger iPad models. For consumers prioritising a pocketable tablet with premium display and improved durability, the A20 Pro represents the most fully featured mini to date; for others, the price premium may push them toward Apple’s larger-format offerings.
