Police in Malawi have rescued a British woman, Nusrat Osman, after an operation that ended in a shootout and the deaths of four people described by authorities as her alleged abductors.
Osman was seized outside her home in the southern city of Blantyre on 11 September at about 12:30pm, local time, according to accounts of the incident. The abduction prompted an intensive search by security forces.
Before the rescue, police had offered a reward of 30 million Malawi kwacha (approximately £12,950) for information that would lead to Osman’s recovery and the arrest of those responsible. The reward was publicised as part of efforts to gather leads from the public.
The case has been the focus of a coordinated response by law enforcement in Malawi.
