Jayden Daniels’ decision to scramble in the closing seconds of overtime left the Washington Commanders unable to stop the clock and turned what looked like a game-winning drive into a 27-27 tie with the New York Giants on Sunday.
Washington gained possession in overtime after defensive tackle Daron Payne stripped the ball from Cam Skattebo with the Giants in range for a potential game-winning field goal. Daniels quickly advanced the Commanders to the Giants’ 24-yard line, but with 12 seconds remaining and no timeouts, he kept the ball on a scramble and was tackled for no gain.
The Commanders lined up to spike the ball, but the clock hit zero before the play could be run and the contest ended in a draw. Coach Dan Quinn was seen ripping off his headset on the sideline in visible frustration as the teams accepted the tie. Both sides had committed critical errors in the extra period after a back-and-forth regulation that included a New York comeback from 14 points down.
The result leaves Washington at 1-3-1 on the season. The tie preserved both teams from a loss but left unanswered questions about late-game decision-making for the Commanders.
Other results from Sunday included a dominant performance by the Patriots, where Maye threw four touchdown passes in a 45-17 win over the Raiders. In London, the Jacksonville Jaguars stunned the Philadelphia Eagles with a game-winning play as time expired, scoring with one second left to secure the victory.
