Dogs mirror owners’ blinks, study suggests a social role for blinking

Researchers report that dogs blink more frequently when they see their owners blink, indicating that blinking may have acquired social significance in dog–human interactions. The finding builds on earlier work showing dogs respond to human gaze and can discriminate facial expressions.

Researchers have found that domestic dogs increase their blinking when they observe their owners blinking, a pattern the authors say points to a possible social function for blinking in dog–human interactions. The study adds a new dimension to research on the mutual gaze between people and their pets, suggesting that even subtle facial cues can be exchanged and mirrored across species.

Findings The investigators recorded blink rates in dogs while their owners blinked and report a clear rise in blinking by the animals in response. While dogs are well known for engaging in prolonged eye contact with humans, the observation that they copy a short, involuntary action such as blinking suggests that some low-level facial behaviours may carry communicative weight in the human–dog relationship.

Context This result complements previous studies indicating dogs are highly attuned to human social signals: past research has shown dogs adopt the so-called "puppy eyes" expression when humans look at them and that canine brains can distinguish between different human facial emotions, including happy faces and fearful expressions as distinct from angry or sad ones.
