Filipino-Icelandic artist Yaelokre builds hand-drawn pop world that found a global audience

What began as a school project about children in animal masks has grown into a multimedia universe and an unexpected pop phenomenon, with the creator — known as Yaelokre and born Keath Ósk — preparing to step into the public eye.

A bedroom-made school project about plucky fictional children in animal masks has evolved into a widely followed musical and visual project, drawing an intense online fanbase and a major label interest.

The work centers on Meadowlark, an imagined world populated by fey, hand-drawn characters who wear animal masks and appear in illustrations that accompany intimate, folk-inflected songs. One of those tracks, "Harpy Hare," backed by a guitalele (a guitar/ukulele hybrid), opens with the line: "Harpy Hare, where have you buried all your children?" The lullaby-like song became an unlikely TikTok sensation and in the summer of 2024 reached No. 1 on Spotify's Global Viral Songs chart.

The artist behind Meadowlark performs under the name Yaelokre and is Keath Ósk, an Icelandic-Filipino creator who first developed the project as a diary that turned into a storybook. Two years ago, much of the work was made in Ósk's bedroom and circulated with minimal fan infrastructure. Since then an active Reddit community and a wider online following have grown around the project, and Ósk has attracted the attention of a major label.

Today Yaelokre has nearly three million monthly listeners on Spotify and last year completed a sell-out tour of the UK and Ireland. Fans have been drawn to the project's blend of hand-drawn illustration, narrative worldbuilding and intimate folk-pop songwriting, which many describe as a gentle, escapist space for Gen Z listeners.

Ósk has signalled a move toward greater visibility and said they are ready to reveal themself publicly after years of cultivating an enigmatic persona through Meadowlark's characters. The transition comes as the project moves from a DIY curiosity into a sustained commercial and creative endeavour, watched closely by fans and industry alike.
