Oklahoma City maintained its perfect start to the season with a 108-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, but the win was overshadowed by a frightening injury to All-Star guard Jalen Williams.
Williams, 25, collided with the court as he drove to the basket with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter. His left leg appeared to give way on landing and his foot was seen at an unnatural angle. He was attended to on the floor before being placed on a stretcher and taken from the court with towels covering the injured area.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with 34 points, was visibly emotional as Williams was removed. He covered his mouth with his hands and at one point appeared to be in tears, while players on both teams looked stunned by the scene.
The Thunder said they would have more information about Williams' condition on Monday. The team lost three players to injury in the game, including Williams, but no further details on the other injuries were provided in the immediate aftermath.
Despite the late incident, Oklahoma City closed out the game to extend its unbeaten run to three games, but the mood in the locker room was somber as the focus shifted to Williams' wellbeing and the impact of the injuries on the roster moving forward.
