A long-running study by researchers at Columbia University has found an association between improved air quality and better early childhood cognitive development. The team reports that efforts to reduce air pollution in parts of New York City corresponded with higher scores on cognitive tests given to toddlers.
Study design and population
Led by Professor Frederica Perera of the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health, the researchers measured air pollution exposure among pregnant women and followed the development of their children for more than two decades. The cohort included over 1,100 children drawn from disadvantaged neighbourhoods in northern Manhattan and the South Bronx, who were assessed at ages one, two and three.
The investigators used long-term exposure data collected during pregnancy and linked those measures to standardized cognitive assessments in early childhood. By repeatedly evaluating the same children at multiple ages, the study sought to capture early neurodevelopmental outcomes in communities that have historically faced higher pollution burdens.
