The Kansas City Chiefs made a strong statement on Monday night as Patrick Mahomes returned from a season-ending knee injury and the team routed the Denver Broncos 31-10.
Mahomes, playing nine months to the day after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, took part in the full offseason program and every practice of training camp and quickly quieted doubts about his mobility. He capped the Chiefs’ opening drive with a 15-yard touchdown run and added two touchdown passes as he eased back into game action.
Kenneth Walker III, making his debut in Kansas City, provided a powerful complement to Mahomes, rushing for 173 yards and scoring twice. Walker’s breakout performance shifted attention away from the quarterback’s return and illustrated the Chiefs’ balanced offensive attack.
The Broncos, meanwhile, struggled to find traction and were held to 10 points. Denver’s offence misfired at key moments and could not contain Kansas City’s ground and passing game, leaving the visitors with little opportunity to mount a sustained comeback.
Monday night’s game offered an early look at a Chiefs team operating with a healthy Mahomes and a newly installed running threat.
