The Met Office has placed parts of the country under a severe weather warning for fog ahead of Friday, saying conditions are likely to produce very poor visibility during the morning commute. Forecasters warned motorists to expect slow-moving traffic and potentially hazardous driving as mist and fog thicken in some areas.
Authorities said the reduced visibility associated with fog can greatly increase stopping distances and make it harder for drivers to judge the position of other vehicles and road hazards. Local highways teams, police and transport operators are preparing for the possibility of disruption and are expected to issue updates where conditions deteriorate.
Commuters were advised to allow extra time for journeys and to monitor their chosen route before setting out. Transport operators typically adjust timetables and advise passengers when fog affects rail and air services, and drivers are usually urged to use dipped headlights, reduce speed and keep a greater distance from the vehicle in front.
The Met Office urged members of the public to follow local travel guidance, check for live traffic information and stay tuned to updates from transport providers. While fog is often short-lived, rapidly changing visibility makes it a particular concern for busy morning periods when many people are on the roads.
