Incident on the field
New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was knocked unconscious and had to be taken from the field in a stretcher during the sixth inning of Thursday night’s 3-0 loss to Philadelphia. The injury occurred as Young and pitcher Nolan McLean converged on a slow grounder hit by Justin Crawford; McLean’s knee struck Young in the head during the collision.
Immediate response
Young was briefly unresponsive at the scene and was carted off the field for further evaluation. Team medical staff attended to him immediately following the play before he was transported to a hospital for imaging.
Medical update
Mets manager Andy Green said the CT scan performed at the hospital was negative. Green added that Young exhibited concussion symptoms but had full use of his extremities. He said the "scariest outcomes were avoided."
Outlook
The team has not provided a timetable for Young’s return to play. The club and medical staff will continue to monitor him as he undergoes concussion protocol and additional evaluations.
