Tesla has recalled nearly 3 million vehicles in China because of a problem related to hidden or retractable door handles, the company said. The large-scale recall is one of the biggest in the automaker's history in its largest single-country market.
Chinese-built models from other manufacturers are also affected. Domestic automakers XPeng, Xiaomi and Geely have announced recalls linked to the same door-handle issue, underscoring that the fault is not limited to a single brand.
Automakers and regulators worldwide increasingly scrutinise vehicle components as cars incorporate more automated and space-saving features. Retractable or concealed door handles have become more common on modern electric vehicles for aerodynamic and design reasons, but faults can prompt widespread remedial action when they affect occupant safety or door operation.
The recalls add to ongoing operational and regulatory challenges for the industry in China, where competition among established global brands and fast-growing local firms remains intense. Manufacturers typically address such recalls with inspections, part replacements or software updates, and will be expected to communicate repair plans to affected owners in line with local rules.
