Opposition parties pressed Andy Burnham to take a more urgent approach to the perceived Russian threat, urging him to emulate steps taken by French president Emmanuel Macron. Macron earlier said he had put measures in place to protect France’s critical infrastructure amid growing security concerns.
Macron’s announcement prompted calls from across the political spectrum for similar decisive action. Opposition figures argued that the scale of the current geopolitical risk demands rapid, co-ordinated measures to safeguard key systems and infrastructure, and urged Burnham to spell out comparable plans.
Meeting at No 10 North
Separately, Micheál Martin, the taoiseach of Ireland, met Burnham at No 10 North and thanked him for his stance on Israel. Martin praised the United Kingdom’s position and, referring to sanctions on West Bank settlements that he said had been imposed by Burnham’s government, said: “I think for the United Kingdom under your leadership to take the stance that it’s taken, I think, is important for … standing up for humanitarian values and justice and fulfilling the rights of all in the Middle East to security, to peace and to some decent future for their children and generations to come.”
Martin framed Irish support for the Palestinian cause as rooted in the country’s historical experience of colonialism, saying that background helps explain strong public and political sympathy for Palestinians.
Youth representation in Parliament
In a separate note on democratic engagement, the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP), formed in 1999, continues to elect more than 300 young people aged 11 to 18 to represent youth views locally. Once a year the UKYP holds a debate in the House of Commons chamber, providing a formal forum for younger voices to raise issues and campaign on a variety of topics.
