Bad light stops Shadman one short
Shadman Islam was left agonisingly short of a hundred on Thursday after deteriorating light brought an early halt to play in the opening Test between Bangladesh and West Indies in Mirpur. Bangladesh finished the day on 213 for 3 with Shadman on 99, unable to complete the landmark as umpires suspended play.
Shadman provided the main resistance for the hosts, compiling a near-century as Bangladesh advanced to 213-3 in the first Test of the series. The interruption denied him the chance to reach three figures and to press the team further into a commanding position before the close.
The stoppage for poor light leaves the opening day unresolved, with Shadman due to resume his innings when play restarts. The visitors' bowlers will face the task of dismissing the in-form opener and breaking any partnerships if conditions improve and play continues.
The result of the first Test remains wide open with much of the match still to be played. Bangladesh will hope to build on the platform provided by Shadman's innings, while West Indies will look for early wickets when play resumes to seize the initiative in the series opener.
