Students told to 'be aware of what you're spending' as cost of living bites

The continuing cost of living crisis is putting exceptional pressure on students, who are being urged to plan ahead, track spending and hunt for bargains. Those eligible should also check whether bursaries or other financial support are available to them.

Students have long relied on thrift — late-night study sessions and cramped shared kitchens are part of the university experience — but the current cost of living squeeze has made money management a more urgent concern for many.

“It is one of the most difficult times to make ends meet as a student,” said Tom Allingham, communications director at Save the Student (STS), noting that rising prices for essentials such as food and energy have "disproportionately affected" students. He added that maintenance loans intended to cover day-to-day costs have not kept pace with inflation.

Practical measures can help stretch limited budgets. The guidance emphasises planning ahead and maintaining a clear picture of income and outgoings: being aware of what you spend, setting simple limits for discretionary spending and building basic routines such as batch-cooking and shopping with a list to avoid impulse purchases. A disciplined approach to day-to-day spending, combined with a sharp eye for discounts and cheaper suppliers, can reduce pressure.

Students are also advised to look for financial support where it exists. Bursaries and discretionary funds administered by universities or external organisations can provide targeted help to those who qualify, and checking eligibility and application deadlines may unlock additional resources.

Welfare teams, student unions and charitable bodies can often point students towards local offers, emergency funds and practical budgeting tools, and many student-focused websites and groups continue to publish tips on saving. With limited margin for error in household budgets, small changes and early planning are being presented as the most practical ways to cope while at university.
