Study finds elevated risks for wild swimmers
Researchers conducting the biggest controlled investigation so far into health outcomes after bathing in lakes and rivers report a higher incidence of skin complaints and stomach illnesses among wild swimmers. The study, carried out at multiple locations in Hungary, found that people who entered inland waters were more than twice as likely to suffer skin problems than non-swimming controls.
Bacterial contamination associated with gastrointestinal illness
The research team also observed that the risk of developing a gastrointestinal infection rose significantly at sites where concentrations of E. coli and other bacteria used as indicators of faecal pollution were higher. The authors say those bacteria levels were linked to an increased likelihood of stomach bugs among swimmers.
