Wembley’s surroundings echoed with brass and percussion long before the first snap as Britain hosted its first US college football game in nearly four decades. The occasion — billed as the inaugural Union Jack Classic — produced a noisy, festival-like atmosphere around the stadium even though thousands of seats inside Wembley remained unfilled.
The Arizona State Sun Devils’ marching band supplied much of the day’s colour. Their performance drew loud responses as horns and trombones swept across Wembley Way and fans added cheers and whoops, helping create an electric build-up to kick-off that belied the patchy attendance inside the bowl.
On the field, however, the spectacle did not match the off-field theatre. Arizona State “cantered to victory”, controlling the contest and leaving little drama in the closing stages, while the on-field play failed to ignite the same kind of sustained excitement that surrounded the event.
The contrast between the noisy, exuberant elements of the occasion and the stretches of empty seating highlights the mixed reception for a transatlantic college-football showcase. Organisers and fans alike will likely take encouragement from the atmosphere generated by bands and travelling supporters, even as questions linger about how to translate that energy into fuller houses and a more compelling game-day product.
For now, the Union Jack Classic will be remembered more for its pageantry than for sporting fireworks, with Arizona State taking the result and much of the football focus back to the United States while Wembley carried the memory of a rowdy, if uneven, cultural exchange.
