The United States survived a stern test from Spain, pulling away in the fourth quarter to win 76-66 and book a place in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup final in Berlin on Saturday.
The game was level at 58 at the end of the third quarter before the four-time defending champions produced a decisive run in the closing period to separate themselves from a resilient Spanish side. The victory sends the Americans into the title game for the fifth straight tournament.
Fourth-quarter surge
Breanna Stewart paced the U.S. attack with 16 points, while Kahleah Copper contributed 13 and Jackie Young added 12 as the team tightened its defence and converted enough scoring chances to pull away. Spain pushed the pace throughout and kept the contest close until the final quarter, but were unable to overcome the champions' late momentum.
The win sets up a final against France in what will be a rematch of the Paris final. The United States will extend their streak of appearances in the FIBA final and attempt to defend their title once more.
The Americans’ ability to find a stronger gear in the last period proved decisive, and their experience at the highest level of international competition remains a key factor as they prepare for the championship game against France.
