Auditors have warned that Wales’ public sector is not moving quickly enough to meet its net-zero ambitions by 2030, saying the overall pace of progress is insufficient.
The watchdog criticised a lack of meaningful progress among organisations across health, local government and other public services in tackling climate change. Its assessment suggests many bodies remain short of the measures and momentum needed to deliver the 2030 objective.
The warning raises questions about how the Welsh Government’s wider climate commitments will be met if public-sector emissions are not cut in line with planned timetables. Public bodies are major emitters and are expected to lead by example in reducing greenhouse gases.
The auditors’ findings are likely to increase pressure on ministers and senior officials to accelerate work on emissions reduction, tighten planning and improve monitoring across the sector. With the 2030 deadline approaching, watchdogs say a step change will be required if targets are to remain realistic.
