Woman testifies she 'closed eyes and tried not to be there' during alleged Russell Brand rape

A woman told a court she shut her eyes and tried to dissociate as the alleged attack took place, as the 51-year-old faces multiple counts relating to sexual offences.

A woman giving evidence in court said she 'closed [her] eyes and tried not to be there' during an incident she described as an alleged rape by Russell Brand.

The testimony came as the 51-year-old faces three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. The charges relate to incidents that have been brought before the criminal courts.

The witness's account formed part of the prosecution case presented to the judge and jury. She described attempts to emotionally and mentally withdraw from the situation while it was taking place, testimony that prosecutors said supported their allegations.

The trial has attracted significant public attention given the high profile of the defendant. Court proceedings will determine whether the allegations can be proven beyond reasonable doubt; the charges remain allegations until and unless a conviction is secured.

Further evidence and witness statements are expected as the case continues, and the court will hear submissions from both the prosecution and defence before reaching any verdict.
